Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Potatoes (Russets or Yukon Gold) (Sliced thin)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter (Unsalted)
  • 1 medium Onion (Minced)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (Grated)
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme (Chopped)
  • 3 tablespoons Flour (All-purpose)
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 1 cup Gruyere Cheese (Shredded)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg (Freshly grated)
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Slice the potatoes into 1/8-inch rounds using a mandoline.
  3. Mince the onion, grate the garlic, chop the thyme, and shred the Gruyere cheese.
  4. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and thyme, and sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and cook for 1 minute to create a roux.
  6. Whisk in the milk gradually, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Stir in the Gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper off the heat until smooth and gooey.
  8. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a buttered baking dish and cover with half of the sauce.
  9. Add the remaining potatoes on top, pour the rest of the sauce, and sprinkle with the remaining Gruyere cheese.
  10. Bake for 45-60 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  11. Let your gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.
