Description

This Philly Cheesesteak recipe with peppers and onions brings the flavors of Philadelphia to your kitchen. Juicy steak, sweet onions, colorful bell peppers, and gooey melted cheese come together in a satisfying sandwich, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (any color), thinly sliced
  • 1 pound thinly sliced ribeye steak or sirloin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese or cheese whiz

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onion and bell peppers. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and the peppers are tender, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the cooked peppers and onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the same skillet. Season the steak with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until it’s browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure the steak is cooked properly for your Philly Cheesesteak.
  3. Return the cooked peppers and onions to the skillet with the steak. Mix everything together well.
  4. Divide the steak and peppers and onions mixture into four equal portions in the skillet. Place two slices of provolone cheese on top of each portion. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey. This is crucial for a great Philly Cheesesteak.
  5. While the cheese is melting, lightly toast your hoagie rolls. You can do this in a separate pan, under the broiler, or in a toaster oven.
  6. Carefully transfer each portion of cheesy steak and peppers and onions mixture into a toasted hoagie roll. Serve your homemade Philly Cheesesteak immediately. Enjoy this classic Philly Cheesesteak with peppers and onions!

Notes

  • For an authentic Philly Cheesesteak experience, use thinly sliced ribeye steak.
  • You can use white American cheese or cheddar cheese instead of provolone for your Philly Cheesesteak.
  • Toast your hoagie rolls for extra crunch and to prevent them from getting soggy.
  • Adjust seasoning to your preference.
  • This recipe is for a classic Philly Cheesesteak with bell peppers and onions.
