Description

Cracker Candy, also known as Christmas Crack, is an easy and addictive dessert that combines saltine crackers with a buttery toffee layer and smooth chocolate topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (approx. 80-90 individual) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk, or a mix)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Flaky sea salt (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a large baking sheet (10×15 inches) with aluminum foil, ensuring it extends up the sides, then optionally cover with parchment paper.
  2. Carefully arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, minimizing gaps.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup packed light brown sugar. Place over medium heat and stir continuously until the mixture comes to a rolling boil (about 5-7 minutes).
  4. Once boiling, reduce heat slightly and continue to boil for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  5. Quickly pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the crackers. Spread it to the edges with a spatula.
  6. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes until the caramel bubbles and the cracker edges turn golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and sprinkle 2 cups of chocolate chips over the caramel. Let sit for 3-5 minutes to melt.
  8. Once melted, spread the chocolate evenly over the surface. Optionally sprinkle flaky sea salt on top.
  9. Let the Cracker Candy cool for about 30 minutes at room temperature, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours to set.
  10. After setting, lift the slab off the baking sheet, break into pieces, and store in an airtight container.
