Description

Hearty German Cabbage Dumplings for Cozy Evenings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head Cabbage (fresh, chopped)
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or Olive Oil (for sautĂ©ing)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Caraway Seeds (optional)
  • 1 cup Vegetable Broth or Water (broth preferred)
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup Milk (or plant-based milk)
  • 1 tablespoon Butter (for finishing)
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Parsley or Chives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  2. Add chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, and optional caraway seeds. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until cabbage is tender.
  3. Then, add broth, cover, and simmer for another 10 minutes.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Incorporate egg and milk, stirring gently until a soft dough forms—add more milk if necessary for the right consistency.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the simmering cabbage mixture. Cover tightly and steam for 10-12 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Stir in the optional tablespoon of butter, mix gently, and serve hot, garnished with chopped parsley or chives.
