Description
Hearty German Cabbage Dumplings for Cozy Evenings
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 head Cabbage (fresh, chopped)
- 1 medium Yellow Onion (chopped)
- 2 tablespoons Butter or Olive Oil (for sautéing)
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1 teaspoon Caraway Seeds (optional)
- 1 cup Vegetable Broth or Water (broth preferred)
- 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 large Egg
- 1 cup Milk (or plant-based milk)
- 1 tablespoon Butter (for finishing)
- 2 tablespoons Chopped Parsley or Chives (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened.
- Add chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, and optional caraway seeds. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until cabbage is tender.
- Then, add broth, cover, and simmer for another 10 minutes.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Incorporate egg and milk, stirring gently until a soft dough forms—add more milk if necessary for the right consistency.
- Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the simmering cabbage mixture. Cover tightly and steam for 10-12 minutes without lifting the lid.
- Stir in the optional tablespoon of butter, mix gently, and serve hot, garnished with chopped parsley or chives.
