Description

Crispy golden tortillas filled with tender, flavorful Salsa Verde chicken. These Chicken Flautas Mexicanas are an easy and authentic dish perfect for weeknight meals or gatherings. They offer a delightful crunch and vibrant taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • 1/2 cup salsa verde
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 12 corn tortillas
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sour cream, queso fresco, avocado slices

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the cooked shredded chicken, salsa verde, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the chicken is evenly coated. This is your flavorful filling for the chicken flautas.
  2. Warm the corn tortillas in the microwave for 30 seconds or in a dry skillet for 15 seconds per side to make them pliable. This prevents them from breaking when you roll them. These are essential for making perfect Mexican chicken flautas.
  3. Place a small amount of the chicken mixture (about 2 tablespoons) onto one edge of a warm tortilla.
  4. Roll the tortilla tightly around the filling to form a flauta. Secure with a toothpick if needed. Repeat with the remaining tortillas and chicken filling to create all your chicken flautas.
  5. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep pot over medium-high heat.
  6. Carefully place a few rolled chicken flautas into the hot oil, seam-side down. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  7. Fry the flautas for 2-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the crispy chicken flautas from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Remove toothpicks if used.
  9. Serve the homemade chicken flautas immediately with your favorite toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sour cream, queso fresco, and avocado slices. Enjoy these delicious chicken flautas!

Notes

  • You can use leftover rotisserie chicken for a quick and easy shredded chicken flautas recipe.
  • For baked chicken flautas, preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spray the rolled flautas with cooking spray and bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy. This is a healthy chicken flautas alternative.
  • To make these chicken flautas spicier, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a chopped jalapeño to the chicken mixture.
  • These Mexican chicken flautas are great for meal prepping. You can prepare the chicken filling ahead of time.
