Description
Wisconsin Apple Kringle is a delightful pastry filled with warm spiced apples, perfect for autumn treats.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (Can substitute with gluten-free flour)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (Can use brown sugar for richer flavor)
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter (Keep cold for best texture)
- 1 packet active dry yeast (Instant yeast can be used without proofing)
- 1 cup milk (Non-dairy milk can be used)
- 1 large egg (For vegan, use flaxseed egg)
- 1 cup spiced apple filling (Store-bought filling is an option)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (Add vanilla or cinnamon for extra flavor)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Almond extract can be used instead)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, active dry yeast, and a pinch of salt. Mix in cold, unsalted butter until resembling coarse crumbs. Gradually add warm milk and the egg; stir until smooth.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap or cover with a towel, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface until about ¼ inch thick. Spread the spiced apple filling down the center, fold the dough over and pinch edges to seal. Shape into an oval or horseshoe on a baking sheet lined with parchment.
- Allow the kringle to rise in a warm spot for about 30-45 minutes, until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush top with remaining egg wash for a glossy finish. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Once cooled slightly, drizzle with a glaze made from powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
