Description
This Sausage Breakfast Casserole is a comforting and satisfying dish perfect for feeding a crowd. It features fluffy eggs, savory sausage, and gooey cheese baked with bread, making it an ideal make-ahead meal for brunches or holiday mornings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard
- 6 slices white bread, cubed
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions (optional)
- Butter for greasing
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbled. Drain excess fat.
- Layer the cubed bread in the bottom of the prepared dish, then scatter the cooked sausage on top. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and dried mustard. Pour egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
- Sprinkle with chopped green onions if desired. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for best results as it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming soggy.
- For an extra golden top, sprinkle a little additional cheese before baking.
- This breakfast sausage casserole can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance.
