Description

A delicious homemade version of the classic boxed favorite, this Hamburger Helper recipe is cheesy, hearty, and flavorful. It’s a budget-friendly, one-pan comfort food perfect for quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess grease.
  2. Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic, chili powder, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the undrained diced tomatoes and beef broth. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  4. Stir in the milk and uncooked elbow macaroni. Bring back to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the macaroni is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy. Serve your homemade Hamburger Helper hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • You can substitute other pasta shapes like shells or rotini.
  • Feel free to add in cooked vegetables like corn or peas.
  • For a creamier texture, use whole milk.
