Fluffy bao buns are a versatile and comforting dish perfect for any gathering or weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups All-Purpose Flour (Bread flour can be used for a chewier bite.)
- 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast (Ensure it’s fresh for the best results.)
- 2 tablespoons Sugar (You can substitute with honey or agave syrup.)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (Crucial for balancing the dough.)
- 1 cup Warm Water (Aim for about 110°F (43°C) for activation.)
- 1 cup Milk (Non-dairy alternatives like almond or soy milk work too.)
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil (Feel free to substitute with melted butter.)
- 1 pound Pork Belly, Chicken, or Tofu (Customize with your favorite proteins.)
- Add-ons (Sautéed Vegetables & Sauces) (Elevate with your choice of seasonal vegetables.)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and active dry yeast. Gradually stir in warm water (110°F or 43°C) until a soft dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and divide into equal portions. Roll each piece into flat circles, about 4 inches in diameter.
- Cook your chosen filling in a pan with soy sauce and Sriracha until caramelized. Mix in chopped sautéed vegetables.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the edges over to seal.
- Steam the filled buns in a bamboo steamer for about 15 minutes until fluffy.
